“Untouchable Rodri the master and commander as Spain prevail”

Rodri has remained a step ahead of the competition throughout these global finals, the embodiment of Spain’s success and a worthy adidas Golden Ball winner.

The way he has sprayed the ball almost effortlessly around the pitch has been enough to captivate even the most casual observer of this FIFA World Cup 2026™, with his jaw-dropping control, immaculately timed passes and long-range shooting a joy for any neutral fan. Yet there is so much more to Rodri’s game than that. Not only has he acted as the starting point for Spain’s attacking endeavours in North America, he has embodied their blueprint for success.

Yet there is so much more to Rodri’s game than that. Not only has he acted as the starting point for Spain’s attacking endeavours in North America, he has embodied their blueprint for success.

Rodri’s knack of making the difficult look oh-so simple underpinned another superb Spanish showing as the Iberians secured a second star in New York New Jersey. Off the social media grid and with not a single tattoo in sight, the Madrid-born defensive midfielder inspires those around him through his painstaking pursuit of perfection.

In the showpiece match against Argentina, the Manchester City stalwart delivered a masterclass in recoveries and interceptions. Spain’s captain, who compensates for any lack of natural pace with a high-octane approach, ruled the midfield as he won duel after duel. La Albiceleste, so used to wresting control, simply had no answer to Spain’s mix of pressing and passing, of combining the proactive with the pragmatic.

  • Ballon d’Or Winner (2024) – first Spaniard since 1960.
  • Anchored Spain’s midfield at UEFA Euro 2024 (winners) and World Cup 2026 (winners).
  • Won Golden Ball at World Cup 2026 for best player.
  • Four-time Premier League champion with Manchester City.

Besides pulling the strings with clarity, vision and balance, the 30-year-old called the shots and raised the standards – for instance, telling Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsi when to drive from the back or when to bring the full-backs into play. He also let his forwards know when they could turn with the ball, with Mikel Oyarzabal in particular benefiting from Rodri’s influence. This orchestrator-in-chief not only knows his own role inside out, but has a perfect command of his supporting cast.

Displaying trademark humility, he walked through the mixed zone after the match with the coveted World Cup crown tucked under his arm and a bag bursting with shirts and gifts. If Rodri can appear to operate at a slower pace than those around him, he has gained that rare luxury of time and space thanks to being a step ahead of the rest. Anticipation is key, as he told FIFA: “My main focus is on my positioning and understanding where the ball might end up. In the modern game, a lot of people fail to recognise the massive significance of the out-of-possession phase.”

Spain’s inspiration in pretty much all eight of their assignments at the global extravaganza – comprising seven victories and that curtain-raising stalemate with Cabo Verde – Rodri helped Unai Simon and the rest of La Roja’s defence chalk up a staggering seven shut-outs on the road to glory. “I don’t think any other team masters as many facets of the game as we do. I’m talking about pressing, possession, counter-attacks and set-pieces,” he said.

The midfielder’s body of work in North America has included more high-intensity runs than any other World Cup 2026 player, plus the most movements to receive the ball in front of the opposition’s team shape. The ACL injury that Rodri suffered soon after winning UEFA EURO 2024 as Player of the Tournament has been consigned to memory.

His selection as adidas Golden Ball winner sealed his status as Spain’s undisputed leader on and off the pitch. Final match-winner Ferran Torres waxed lyrical about his skipper, who played for Villarreal and Atletico Madrid in his home country before joining Man City: “He’s a captain, a leader and, all in all, he’s our biggest role model.”

At Qatar 2022, when Luis Enrique was coach, Sergio Busquets occupied the anchorman role with Rodri deployed at centre-back. However, following Luis de la Fuente’s appointment, Rodri slotted into a more familiar berth in the middle third, serving to propel Spain to a whole new level. On North American soil, the No16 set the tone for his side’s attacking forays, aided by the individual brilliance of the likes of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. La Roja were simply too good.

Wearing sun glasses and a beaming smile, winger Yamal opted not to speak to the press as he waltzed through the mixed zone in the aftermath of Spain’s extra-time triumph. Yet he did break his silence to offer a glowing assessment of Rodri: “He’s just an absolutely outstanding player.”

The fitting epithet for the player of these finals.
